Grand Campaigner Squares & Hexes Mat! One of the greatest strengths of tabletop gaming is that the possibilities are literally endless, limited only by the imaginations of intrepid players and gleefully scheming dungeon masters. Campaigns, characters and settings are adaptable to an infinite degree because the game assets exist in the mind, because they aren't printed on game boards, trading cards, and the like. Often the only physical elements of a table top game are character sheets, maybe some miniatures, and a set of fair but unforgiving polyhedral dice. Read more Set Up the Battlefield Think of battle mats as steroids for your campaigns. Formerly nebulous dungeons now have distinct, exacting shapes, like bottlenecks to force tough engagements, or blind spots for traps and ambushes. Devote a single 1" hex amongst an ocean of 2,460 others to house a nefarious pressure plate. Lend your post-apocalyptic wasteland some scenery to appreciate and geography to negotiate. Graph out precise areas of effect, reveal lines of sight. Battle mats add lucidity, but also complexity. Read more Why You'll Love It Our double-sided Grand Campaigner is made from durable, textured vinyl. It travels and stores well but lays flat when unrolled, unlike laminated card stock mats. Each Grand Campaigner measures a spacious 48" by 36" featuring an absurd 1,564 square inches of usable space. Accommodating several styles of play and sets of rules, the Grand Campaigner uses both a hex and a grid system, packing an impressive 2,461 hexes and 1,564 squares onto a mat 4' wide and 3'; long. Note : Because this mat is made from textured vinyl, it is not 100% erasable. However, we have experienced good results with Vis a Vis wet erase markers. For best results, use only wet erase markers, and try to erase within 3-4 hours. Please note that the included marker is permanent, and whenever you test new markers, do so on an inconspicuous part of the mat Read more Wooden Dice Trays Piecekeeper Bowls, 6-Pack Dice Wars Dice Boxes, 10-Pack Folding Dice Rolling Tray Roll out with more dice and accessories Wiz Dice has to offer! A few printing errors across the mat, otherwise I love it!The grid side of the mat was covered in stains and had some misprints. Thankfully, the stains came off with warm water, soap, and 10 minutes of scrubbing. Other reviews show more severe misprints than what I recieved, so you can probably expect to get some misprints on yours too.Overall: it’s okay. First impressions were bad, but it works fine for a battle mat. You would do better buying a factory second Chessex megamat instead.I can't get colored wet erase markers to com÷ off 100% it leaves a 10-20% ghosting depending on the color behind. Rubbing alcohol did not remove. This thing is huge.It does look a bit like a 4 year old with safety scissors cut it off the roll.Would love to give it a 4.5 because wet erase instead of dry erase is kind of a pain. I have to keep my markers separate and make sure nobody accidentally brings a dry erase one.Ignored the warning not to leave markings on it overnight. Left a map there for 2 weeks. Windex took it right away. It's absolutely ENORMOUS. I realize the dimensions are in the title, but be sure to take a moment to really pay attention to those numbers. This thing covers my entire dining table (almost eerily exactly). So why the three stars? Two reasons, one of which is minor and may be my own fault, the other is much more big of a deal.Firstly, I used some Staedtler Non-Permanent Markers on this mat, understanding (possibly incorrectly) that those are wet-erase pens which should be fine for this mat. I could *not* get the ink to erase after leaving it on for less than ten minutes, which is a reasonable amount of time since I was running a combat scenario on the mat. Even after using windex, rubbing alcohol, EXPO whiteboard cleaning fluid, and finally a magic eraser, there are still some residual stains from the markers. Since this may be my own fault, I'm not counting it against the mat-- I'm only including it in this review for the reader's information. What really made me rate this mat so low (for me) is that many of the grid lines were worn off even before its first use. None of the marks were worn off so terribly that we couldn't accurately draw a map, but it was disappointing given the cost of the mat and my (previously) unmarred experience with WizDice products. Since the wear is tolerable, I'm not returning the mat, but for those who are picky about this sort of thing, beware. I'm assuming that I can simply draw the lines back on with a sharpie (or apparently even a Staedtler Non-Permenent!).Knowing what I know now, I would definitely still buy this again. Next time I would simply expect to have to take great care in testing which markers I can use, and will expect that I might have to darken in some of the faded/worn-off lines.Edit: Changed review from 3 to 4 stars and modified title, definitely not disappointed any more :) Grid lines were easily drawn back on, and the seller offered a full replacement after hearing of the grid lines wearing off. Great company, Great seller, Great product.I have been wargaming and role-playing for over 50 years, and I have worn through a dozen or so "battle mats."This is a very large battle mat, and the price is extremely competitive. If you use a battle mat then it is not going to last forever. (Some of the other reviews read as though you are buying something to pass along to your grandchildren - under normal, weekly or bi-weekly gaming stress and strain, one of these is likely to last 3-4 years max.)Back when Gamescience was the quality place to go to for dice, battle mats, counters, etc., I used to order battle mats strictly from them. Since GS mostly disappeared, I have ordered from a variety of sources, e.g., WizKids, WotC, Paizo, ...Of all of the recent, last ten years purchases, this mat is both the largest and the best price for what you get.(Please see the enclosed pictures.)The reason I bought this extra large mat is that my party was complaining that they did not have enough space on the previous mat to fire long range - not a problem now.I could not be happier with this mat.The first thing I noticed about the mat is that it was shipped as a roll, not folded and flat. I thought this might curl up on our gaming table but it stayed flat within thirty minutes of laying it out and placing some books at the ends. The grids are thick and printed in a red-brown color, so it contrasts surprisingly well with a black wet erase marker. We kept the drawings of our terrain on for a good hour or two and had no trouble wiping them off, and the surface dries quickly as well.As with most battle mats, one side is 1 inch hex and the other is 1 inch squares. There was a printing error and some of the ink smudged on the square side of the girds, but for $23 I got a large battle mat with straight and even lines. Even with the printing error, I'd price something like this at $30-$35, so I think I got a very good deal out of it.One note: the instruction/care manual is wrapped around the roll itself, probably to integrate the paper keeping the roll tight during shipping and save money, so I accidentally tore it apart, thinking it was just random paper.I highly recommend this; it fits well on a table and is well-priced for its quality. Happy gaming! As you can see from the photo there are a bunch of blank spots in the grid. It also looks like the material is cut with scissor as the edges are far from straight and it wasn't rolled properly and the folds won't come out. Finally, we used wet erase markers on the item and the material stained and the marker won't even come out with alcohol.Don't get me wrong, it's a nice product. The only downside to me is that it is difficult to get rid of the "ply" marks. It's really not easy to get this to lay straight on the table, there's always a small "ledge" that will put your figurines down.I tried heating the mat with a heat gun, just slightly so it doesn't damage it and it does 95% of the job. But I wish I didn't have to do it every time me and my friends play D&D (not so much these days but anyways). But I would recommend it to others, it is cool that it is 2-sided, one side with squares and the other side with hexagons. The mat itself is a decent size, but it arrived with side being damaged from being stood in its end, some of the lines are smudged from the printing. After a playing session, the grid itself is even, but the mat as a whole is not anything special. The edges are not straight and look like they were cut by a 3 year old with safety scissors... Definitely not work the money spent on ithad this a few month now everything was good until i tried to draw some roads etc on it with wet erase markers for the lasts campaign as instructed now i cant get the lines off tried everything from Windex to mr sheen eraser its faded a bit but the grid lines are coming off so now im stuck with a marked game areaThe product arrived sooner than expected. The packaging was all crumbled up, but the product took back it's shape very quickly when opened. The mat falls flat quickly after unrolling it. However, the sides look as if they were cut haphazardly with a pair of scissors and there are long lines probably made with a pen to trace the sides of the mat on the hex face. I have not managed to erase these lines after many attempts. There are also some places where the art on the mat is faded. After doing some tests I noticed that markers never truly fade even when using wet-erase markers. I was not expecting much for 40$ but I think it would be worth investing in a smaller higher quality model.
